Swimming is a multitudinal mode of exercise that offers several key health benefits, such as increased aerobic endurance and muscular development. In order to maximize the benefits associated with swimming, it’s important to execute each stroke with proper form. Swimming is no different from any other type of aerobic activity in that it requires commitment and consistent effort in order to gain substantial results.
The most common competitive swim strike is known as “freestyle.” This stroke is designed to allow swimmers to navigate through the water with speed while expending a minimal amount of energy. The freestyle motion incorporates a smooth overhead arm motion and constant on-the-surface flutter kick. The kick should involve minimal splashing to reduce drag so that fluid movement is achieved. It takes frequent practice in order to perfect all strokes, but the freestyle technique can be enhanced with the use of a kickboard and by practicing standing arm strokes.
Regular practice is an important segment of developing better technique in the lap pool. It also supplies avid swimmers with enhanced fitness. Each swim session should commence with a brief warm-up period, just like someone in the gym would do. An effective warm-up period includes stretching, kicking and swimming at reduced speeds. Slowly navigating through the water during each warm-up period allows swimmers the ability to perfect their stroke while developing a rhythm. Over time, this will enable quicker movement.
Breathing patterns are perhaps the most difficult aspect of swimming to master, but proper technique helps swimmers conserve energy and move with greater efficiency. Swimming differs from other aerobic activities, such as running, because oxygen can’t be hogged in each stroke. Swimming becomes more challenging when proper breathing technique isn’t executed. Insufficient oxygen levels also starve working muscles and decrease stamina. During each warm-up, practice taking a breath after every three strokes. This might seem challenging, but it will provide the body with a more complete workout.
Swimming exercises muscles throughout the entire body, including the core and quadriceps muscles. Over time, beginning swimmers develop increased aerobic capacity and muscle strength, enabling them to swim at greater speeds. Stamina is also a product of consistent effort. It’s important to focus on technique before attempting to blast up-and-down the lap pool at record speeds. Perfecting each stroke takes time and commitment.
