Volleyball is a sport that demands frequent repetition of movement. It’s important for coaches to develop a structured practice plan that incorporates all aspects of the game in order to help players become better in each facet. All aspects of volleyball can be practiced in drills that require players to jump, dive and run.
Hitting is the most exhilarating part of playing volleyball. A basic technique in helping players develop better skills in this regard is to set up hitting lines, starting at the 10-foot line on each side of the court. This requires two players on each side of the net to set for his or her teammates. Both lines should be set up on the same side of the court for maximum efficiency. After each spike, a player must retrieve the ball and return to the opposite line. Each player should have his or her own ball to toss to the setter.
Blocking is a fundamental necessity of volleyball. Good blocking technique prevents the opposition from having clear-cut opportunities to rack up points on the scoreboard. Players need to demonstrate strong vertical leaping ability in order to block. An effective drill for improving blocking technique requires one player to stand on a chair approximately one foot from the net with a volleyball in hand. The player on the opposite side of the net maintains the objective of jumping to reach over the net, without making contact, and grab the volleyball from his or her teammate’s hands. This drill can be done with multiple players lined up on the net simultaneously.
The most pivotal aspect of volleyball is passing. If a pass doesn’t reach the setter, scoring opportunities often do not exist. It’s crucial for players to practice their passing skills in order to develop their fundamental capabilities on the court. Passing can be incorporated into almost any drill. The most basic passing drill is pepper, which simply requires pairs of players to pass the ball to one another, typically by bumping. Passing is perhaps most efficiently practiced in scrimmages because this type of action simulates game-like situations. Proper execution in practice usually results in efficiency during games.
